Productivity tip: quickly index a Moleskine notebook

Indexed Moleskine

I got asked last week why my Moleskine notebooks have markings on their sides (see picture above). Well, it is an old technique for quickly indexing a notebook. I don’t remember who taught me this to give proper credit, but I remember doing this since college.

Write a table of contents on the last page. Each line should be a subject. Then start marking the respective line on the side of the page for each note you write about that subject.

This way, you just have to flip through the pages with the marked line you want to quickly find you are looking for.

Of course that everything in these Moleskine notebooks are scanned with Scannable and stored in Evernote, which OCRs everything for quick searching. But when I need to find something ‘offline’, this old method still works like a charm.
