New Twitter apps for iOS

Twitter released new apps for iOS yesterday. Among the new features, there is better support for push notifications and expandable tweets. It also seems that Twitter is fulfilling the promise of delivering a more consistent experience across clients.

The update adds fine-grain adjustments to push notifications, so now you can tie them to particular accounts. For instance, you could turn on a push notification for an essential service account, let’s say, your internet provider customer service, so you can monitor its updates more thoroughly.

Expandable tweets look nice, but honestly, the partners list needs to grow so it becomes more useful. When it’s available, the content previews look good and you don’t need to leave the app to just take a glimpse at the relevant parts of a piece of news.

The app look and feel is more consistent than ever across platforms, so the Twitter experience is indeed consistent now. The iPad, though, has the best app of all, thanks to the larger display — my favorite is the in-app browser feature, which previews an URL when you tap a tweet, then goes away with a swipe of a finger.

Although these apps look slick, they lack a bunch of features, like timeline synchronization across devices. In terms of features and usability, I still recommend Tweetbot over the official Twitter app.
