Plane-spotting in D.C.

U.S. Airways Airbus A319

So, I had this Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 55-200 f/4-5.6G VR lens for some time now but actually never used it, apart from a couple shots in Cold Spring last week. To be honest, I just got it because it was very cheap ($179). I never intended to walk out of Adorama carrying a tele lens that day. Anyway, I needed to test this thing and I remembered that the planes fly really low over the Potomac river in the Lincoln Memorial/Arlington Memorial Bridge area. So I went there to try some shots.

Overall, it’s a decent lens for its price. The shots are sharp enough throughout most of the range (it lacks some detail at 200mm) and the VR system works pretty well. And it’s very lightweight as well, so you can carry it around easily (unlike those 70-200mm f/2.8 bazookas). The AF system could be a bit faster, though. I lost some shots due to its lack of speed. But, hey! For $179, it’s good enough, don’t you think so?

I will keep a gallery of shots taken with the 55-200mm lens on Flickr.
