My best photos of 2014

My best photos of 2014 - Cover: 180º sunset panorama from Ponte Luis I
Slow year for photography here, but nevertheless, I managed to finish my New York in Black & White project and get some decent shots around Portugal. Here are my top 5 best photos of 2014.

5. Baixa de Lisboa panorama

It is known to most tourists that Castelo de São Jorge offers the best views of Lisbon. In this partly cloudy day, it was fairly easy to capture the sun rays striking the Tejo river in this 9-photo panorama that captures the old city centre and the 25 de Abril bridge.

4. Dripping water

The Central Park Pond is full of ducks. In this cold winter day, one of them got close enough to the shore and was diving its head into the water repeatedly. I set my camera to burst mode and got this capture of a single drop of water dripping from its beak.

3. Castelo dos Mouros

It’s been a while since I last played with contre-jour photos, but the opportunity was so good I couldn’t resist. Castelo dos Mouros is full of narrow spaces, doors and windows throughout its walls and towers and provide great opportunities for creative composition.

2. Sunny day at the park

The Hudson River Park is one of my favorite places in the city for walking and relaxing. I usually bring my camera here because there is always a good photo opportunity, like this one. I like the lines converging to the 1 World Trade Center and the sun shining right above it.

1. Walking away

My top choice as the best photo of 2014 is an improvised shot. I was sitting on a bench staring at the Tejo river when I saw this scene. I didn’t have too much time for framing, so the composition is a bit worse than it could have been, but what the hell… The image still works for me. In a year marked by tragedies and conflicts, I leave you this as a reminder that life is good.

Have a great 2015!
