Comments on the last Microsoft keynote at CES

If you didn’t bother to follow that, don’t worry. It sucked. In fact, there was only one relevant thing there I would like to mention. I believe I never talked about this here in the blog, but I’ve been saying this constantly to friends and co-workers, so here it goes. The most important thing announced yesterday was Kinect on Windows.

In order to understand why, you need to read between the lines. Kinect + Bing + Voice input is a very powerful way of making people bypass Google seamlessly. The same way Siri has potential for that in the Apple ecosystem (if it ever hits Mac OS X). Microsoft and Apple approaches seem to differ a bit, but in the end, the consequence is the same: minimize Google searches.

For Google, that is pretty bad. No search means no ads, and no ads means no revenue. And search ads is a significant slice of the company’s profits pie. I wonder how they are planning to react to this.
