My best photos of 2013

This year was pretty slow for photography for me, as I haven’t traveled as much as I desired to look for good photo spots. In fact, the most important thing that happened in my photographer life was that I moved away from DSLRs, as I stated in a previous post here in this blog. Nevertheless, I managed to get some decent shots. Here are my 5 best photos of 2013.

5. Royal Ontario Museum at sunset

My best photos of 2013 - 5. Royal Ontario Museum at sunset
Toronto, Canada — Nikon D90, Nikon 16-35mm f/4 VR

In fifth place, a nice finding during Toronto winter earlier this year. I was walking by the Royal Ontario Museum at sunset and an empty street appeared in front of me. The light was just about right for a photo with heavy contrasts between the warm sunlight reflections on the glass panels and the shadows cast by the building’s irregular shape.

4. Boston skyline

My best photos of 2013 - 4. Boston skyline
Boston, USA — Nikon D90, Nikon 16-35mm f/4 VR

This photo is a panorama view of Boston taken from the MIT campus in Cambridge, MA. The Charles River was very calm, creating nice reflections of the skyline. The panorama covers, from east to west, the Financial District, Back Bay and the Prudential Center.

3. Lower Manhattan skyline

My best photos of 2013 - 3. Lower Manhattan skyline
New York, USA — Fujifilm X-E1, Fujifilm 18-55mm f/2.8-4 OIS

The next photo is a 36-megapixel panorama view of Lower Manhattan taken at the Brooklyn Bridge Park this summer. The light was about right and the East River was relatively calm, so the conditions were ideal for stitch the images later. A graduated ND filter creates the darker bottom, which helps emphasizing the Manhattan skyline.

2. Avery Fisher Hall

My best photos of 2013 - 2. Avery Fisher Hall
New York, USA — Fujifilm X-E1, Fujifilm 18-55mm f/2.8-4 OIS

The home of the New York Philharmonic makes it to number two. It is one of my classic ultra-wide-angle photos, looking up very close to a building wall. The sky and light were perfect to create both great color and light contrasts in this image.

1. Remembering 9/11

My best photos of 2013 - 1. Remembering 9/11
New York, USA — Fujifilm X-E1, Fujifilm 18-55mm f/2.8-4 OIS

My best photo of 2013 is this one I took as a tribute to 9/11. The image shows the Empire State Building and the twin light beams at the World Trade Center site, where the twin towers used to stand. This photo was taken at blue hour at the top of 30 Rockefeller Plaza (Top of the Rock observation deck).

And that’s it for my best photos of 2013. For a complete set of all my 2013 images, please go to my Flickr photostream.
